Saving orphaned grizzly cubs

Calgary Zoo

In late April 2020, a poaching incident left three little grizzly bear cubs orphaned in the Alberta wilderness. These little bears were in a precarious situation - they lost their mom at a time when her guidance was most crucial to their survival. Fortunately they were rescued by Alberta Fish and Wildlife, since without a home and a mother to care for them, the future for these cubs looked bleak.

Calgary Zoo was approached to house and care for the cubs until a suitable long-term solution could be found, whether that be another facility or reintroduction back into the wild.

With financial support from the Gordon and Patricia Gray Animal Welfare Foundation, the Calgary Zoo was able to provide the cubs with the specialised care, vaccines, appropriate diet, housing and enrichment activities to ensure they would grow up strong and healthy.
